When a tooth has to come out

Taking a tooth out is the last option, not the first. Dr. Ellis would rather save a tooth than remove it, and she will tell you when saving it is realistic and when it is not.

Teeth come out when decay or a fracture has gone too far to repair, when gum disease has loosened them, when an infection cannot be settled any other way, or when a wisdom tooth is causing trouble it will keep causing.

Simple and surgical extractions

A simple extraction removes a tooth that has come through the gum and can be lifted out whole. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline or has not fully erupted, which is often the case with wisdom teeth. Dr. Ellis does both here.

What happens at your appointment

The area is numbed with local anesthetic. You should feel pressure but not pain, and if you do feel anything sharp, she stops and gives you more.

People are more anxious about extractions than about almost anything else we do, and that is reasonable. Tell us when you book so the appointment can be arranged around it.

Afterwards

You will get aftercare instructions before you leave, and they matter more than people expect, particularly in the first day while the socket is closing over. If something does not feel right afterwards, call us rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Replacing the tooth

If the tooth was one you show when you smile, or one you chew on, it is worth talking about replacing it. The options are an implant or a bridge, and the conversation is easier before the extraction than after it.
