Meet your dentist
Dr. Crystal Ellis
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)
A Bronx native who has been caring for Maryland patients since 2007, Dr. Ellis founded The Smile Suite in Silver Spring in 2012. She brings that same practice to Federal Hill.
Education & training
Dr. Ellis moved to the Washington DC area in 1998 and was admitted to Howard University College of Dentistry in 2003, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2007. She then returned to New York to complete a General Practice Residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. Her clinical training covers Invisalign, porcelain veneers and aesthetic crowns, root canal therapy, oral surgery and dental implant placement.
How she practices
She founded The Smile Suite to give patients a comfortable, relaxing experience in a space that feels considered rather than clinical. Patients describe her as gentle and unhurried, and she takes particular pride in offering her community high-quality care at prices people can afford.
Outside the practice
Dr. Ellis travels whenever she can, keeps up a regular exercise routine, and enjoys decorating, both her home and her office.
What patients say

Common questions
The things people ask before they book.
Are you taking new patients?
Yes. Federal Hill Smiles is open to new patients of every age, and you do not need a referral. Call 443-420-0181 or send us a message through the contact page and we will find you a time.
Do you take my insurance?
We accept a wide range of dental plans. The insurance plans accepted page lists them, and if yours is not there it is still worth calling, because plans change and out-of-network benefits often cover more than people expect.
What happens at a first visit?
Dr. Ellis takes a full look at your teeth, gums and bite, takes any x-rays that are needed, and then talks you through what she found. Nothing gets treated at that visit unless you are in pain and want it dealt with straight away.
I have not been to a dentist in years. Will I get a lecture?
No. Plenty of our patients arrive after a long gap, and the reasons are almost always cost, fear or life getting in the way. Dr. Ellis is interested in where your mouth is now and what you want to do about it, not in what happened before.
I am nervous about the dentist. What can you do?
Tell us when you book and again when you arrive. Dr. Ellis explains each step before she does it, works at the pace you set, and stops whenever you ask her to. If you want to talk through options for staying comfortable during longer treatment, raise it at your first visit.
Do you see children?
Yes. We treat children alongside the rest of the family, so you can book everyone into the same practice rather than running between two.
What should I do in a dental emergency?
Call 443-420-0181 and describe what has happened. Pain, swelling, a knocked-out tooth or a broken restoration all need to be looked at quickly, and we will get you seen as soon as we can. If you have facial swelling that is spreading, or you cannot breathe or swallow properly, go to an emergency room.
How much will treatment cost?
It depends entirely on what you need, so we will not guess before Dr. Ellis has looked. After the examination you get a written treatment plan with the cost of each item and what your insurance is expected to cover, and you decide from there.
How often should I come in for a cleaning?
Most people do well on a regular recall visit, but the right interval depends on your gum health and your history. Dr. Ellis will tell you what she recommends for you after your examination rather than applying a single rule to everyone.
Where exactly are you, and is Dr. Ellis here or in Silver Spring?
We are at 835 Light St in Federal Hill, a few blocks from Cross Street Market. Federal Hill Smiles is Dr. Ellis’s second location alongside The Smile Suite in Silver Spring, and she treats patients at both.
